Do I need a visa to go out of airport for a short visit?

I am US citizen flying from Los Angeles to India. Layover in Beijing 12 hrsI want to go out of airport for a short visit and back to airport ? thanks.

Yes, you need one if you want to gou out of the airport. Also, you can apply for a 24 hour stay permit at the airport.
