About:Chinese Embassies and Consulates

can I upgrade my chinese single entry visa to a multiple entry once I am in China?

ie I want to travel outside of China, then return for a short time (less than 20 days)
I undestand that it is not possible to organise a visa from Hanoi unless I am a national or working in Vietnam.

If you have already got a single entry visa, you can use it to enter China first. If you need another entry to go back to China after leaving for other countries, you can try to apply for a visa extension when you are in China through a visa agency. They are able to handle visa for single entry, double entry or multiple entries. BTW, as far as I know, it is easy for you to get a visa in HK.
