Does chinese visa for an israeli citizen require an invitation?

I'm trying to help some friends of mine, who are israeli citizens, currently traveling, and applying a chinese visa. They say an invitation is required. Is that true? how does it work? Who Should the invitation be from? What should it include?

Thanks.
