Travelling from Lijiang tio Chengdu.

I read that to go from Lijiang to Chengdu the economic way (thus, not by flight), you have to take a bus to Panzhihua (duration: 8 hours ?). From Panzhihua, you take a train to Chengdu. Is it possible to buy your train ticket (Panzhihua-Chengdu) in advance in August 2012 ? Are there budget hostels at Panzhihua ?
Is there any other cheaper and safe way to travel from Lijiang to Chengdu(to see Emei mountain) ? Thanks.

The bus from Lijiang to Panzhihua will take you about 20 hours not 8 hours. So it is not suggested. You will feel uncomfortable.
If you do not want to take the flight, I think the best way is to go to Kunming first and then take the train to Chengdu. There are many trains between Chengdu and Kunming.
You can buy the train ticket in advance and here is a website I always used https://www.travelchinaguide.com/china-trains/ . You can search the train on it and book it.
