when checking bags at the forbidden city

Are you permitted to keep a bag with you.  I was just confused by carry your bag between gates.  Also is there a size limit? If so what size is not permitted?

Bags can be deposited free of charge at the Meridian Gate (Wumen) and Gate of Divine Might (Shenwu Men) from 8:30 to 18:00. If desired, bags can be carried after going through a security check. There is no strict size limit for the bags.
