Hi i fly through Guangzhaou with a brief lay over then onto Beijing where i arrive at 9pm... My flight out to europe does not leave til the following morning at 11am. I'd like to leave the airport to stay at a hotel just for the night (10 hrs) .. Will i need a transit visa? I am Australian. Cheers

If you will leave the airport, you need to apply for a China transit visa before leaving. Or you can apply for a 24 hour Stay Permit at the airport.
