Tourist visa or student visa?

Hello! I need a bit of help on this...

I am going to China to study for 6 months. However, I am afraid I won't get the student visa in time before getting there, as the Chinese university hasn't sent the papers yet. I am going over there earlier than the start of the course and this is why time is of essence.

I was wondering whether I could get a tourist visa instead and change it to student visa once I get to China? Because this is the only one that doesn't require academic papers.

Thank you and I appreciate your help.

If you can not get required paper for X visa application, you can apply for a tourist visa instead. Changing L to F visa is possible if through a visa agency in China, but you may need to pay much for their service.
