Overnight stopover visa

Hi
I am Australian and my partner is British, on our return from Sydney to Heathrow in July we will arrive in shanghai at 8pm in the evening and wont fly out again until midday the next day.
Our plan is to stay in Shanghai city that evening as we do not have a hotel arranged with our flights. What type of visas would we require, if any?
Thanks
Marnie

If you do not leave the airport, no visa is needed. If you want to stay at a hotel outside the airport, you can apply a stay permit at the airport.
