Visa requirements - stopping twice in China for transit

I am an Australian citizen going for a holiday in Europe. On my journey home from Europe, I stop in China twice. I have been advised to get a Chinese Visa, even if I don't leave the airport, because we are stopping in China twice instead of once. Is this advice correct?

Yes, you need to apply for a transit visa in advance.
