About:Top 8 Reasons Why Your China Visa Gets Rejected

I m Australian,going to north America via Guangzhou,do I need a Visa and hotel booking?

Flying China Southern Airlines,on the way out 4h30min,on the way back to Brisbane arriving Guangzhou 16.55 on 14 june and the fly to Brisbane on 15 june departing Guangzhou 21.10(so i have about 24h there in Guangzhou)

Yes, you need a transit visa in advance. Since you arrive at Guangzhou at 16:55 on June14th and departure at 21:10 on June 15th, the transiting time is over 24 hours. The good news is you need not to provide the hotel booking when applying the visa. But I suggest you to book a hotel in Guangzhou in advance, so that you can save the trouble of finding place to rest when you arrives at Guangzhou.
