About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Australian going to London but layover in Shanghai

I am travelling to London but my layover is in Shanghai, China. Will I be eligible for the 24 hour visa free exemption? Do you also apply for it in the country you're departing from?

Yes, you are eligible for the 24-hour visa-free transit. There's no need to apply for anything in advance. Upon arrival in Shanghai, you will get to the visa-free transit counter to apply for a temporary stay permit if you want to leave the airside.
