Yes, you can ap[ply for an extension of less than 30 days stay from the local Public security bureau with acceptable proof of necessary longer stay in Shanghai.

So, you have got 1 year family L visa with 30 days each entry right? if yes, this visa is already the best for you now. You can try to extend it to longer duration next year.

Extention of 30 days is not hard to get. You can apply at the PSB 10 days before your one year duration expires. To remind you, you can ask for twice. So 10 days before your first extention period expires, you can apply an extention of 30 days again. So you may stay in China for about 14 months.

I have to inform you that because this is your first visa to China, as multiple entry with 30 days each, it is ok to use and to my knowledge, it is almost the best for you. If you submit your application for extension to PSB, there is possibility that the officers do not accept your application, or issue you again a new visa with 30 days each entry. It is a waste of money if this way. Extension processing can be done within one day, but it costs a lot.

not necessary to go back to Sri Lanka, you may leave for other countries or regions nearby. It is what all foreigners required to do. I heard from one of my friend that he just pass the control and return back again, so not actually leaving China. Anyway, it may risk.

No, Roshan, Beijing is not ok. That requires you leave from mainland China. HK or macao is a choice for you if possible.
