About:China Visa Entries / Validity / Duration of Stay

Staying longer than 3 months on a tourist visa

I am living in Chiang Mai Thailand, and am US citizen. I have visited China several times, but they give me a double entry 6 month visa. I want to stay in a temple and don't want to leave after three months, since it interrupts my stay. Do you think that friends or the Abbot of the temple can intercede for me at the public security bureau, so that I can stay for the whole 6 months without having to leave? My many friends there are always inviting me to stay in China, but the visa issue has always been an obstacle.

1. There is a way for you to stay for four months. At least 10 days before the duration of your three months duration expires, you can go to the local public security bureau and apply for an extension. The extension will allow you to stay another one month. You can apply for extension only once.
2. There is a way to stay for six months, but it is a little complicated. Since you are a US citizen, you can go to HK without a visa. Go to HK before the duration expires and then re-enter mainland China, you can stay in China for another three months.
