You may just apply for the China visa from the embassy or consulate of China in your living place in Japan. If you are not Chinese origin, spouse or child of a Chinese people, you will have to apply for the China L visa through an authorized travel agency.

The documents required for the visa application are:
1. completed China visa application form V2011A & V2011B
2. Your British passport with over 6 months validity and more than 2 blank pages
3. copy of the personal information page of your passport
4. round-trip air ticket and hotel reservation in China
5. copy of the page of your valid entry record on your passport

Many thanks for your prompt reply to my last question.

Please can you advise what you mean by requirement number 5 of your reply "copy of the page of your valid entry record on your passport".

Thanks very much
Paul

What I mean is that when you enter Japan, the officers in the immigration office will make a stamp on your passport or other travel documents to record your entry. To apply for a China visa in Japan, the copy of the stamped page is necessary.
