Transit visa for a 15 hour stop over

I am flying to the USA for a holiday and on my return to Australia with China Southern I have a 15 hour transit stop over in Guangzhou. Can I stay at the airport hotel or do I require some kind of Visa to leave airport.

You need a China transit visa or a stay permit to leave the airport during the stop at Guangzhou airport.
