About:Chinese Embassy in Australia

We will have a night and a day in Guangzhou before our connecting flight takes us to Europe.

What will we need to be able to leave the airport. If we need a visa, where and how do we apply, does it cost anything? What can you recommend we do? Is it safe to catch taxis? Do people speak English? Are signs just in Chinese or also in English?

You have to apply for a China Transit visa from the China Embassy or Consulate in your living place of domicile with the following documents:
1) One completed Visa Application Form with a passport photograph attached;
2) Your passport with at least 6-month validity and at least 2 blank visa pages;
3) Visa of the destination country.

I think you may visit one of the tourist attractions in Guangzhou such as Yuexiu Park or Ancestral Temple of the Chen Family. It's safe to take a taxi in Guangzhou. Few people speak English in Guangzhou, most of the local people speak Cantonese. However, most of the signs in the airport, at the tourist attractions, shopping malls and on the roads are both in Chinese and English. Just take it easy and have a good time in Guangzhou.
