About:Chinese Embassy in Australia

requirement for visa when not staying overnight ? e.i. cruise ship

travel via cruise ship to Shanghai, then onto Sth. Korea without staying overnight at port, where previously visa not required for overnight stays of less than 3 nights ? The charge by cruise ship company of $238 on top of day cruise charge makes the visit to port far too expensive for the few hours we would be there.. I had reseached your site Feb last and found a link which stated :Aust N.Z. passport holders did not require visa,s for travel of less than 3 overnight stays Is this still Valid? John Stewart

I can't figure out your travel itinerary clearly. Could you please explain it more specific? If you are on a international cruise and you will go ashore in Shanghai, then you will have to apply for a China transit visa.

My understanding is that you should not need a visa, but will be given an stamped entry permit at the point of entry....that's what happened to me on a flight. It was valid for 24 hours.

The 3 day rule you mention was correct when I wrote it, but I am not sure if it is still valid.

To be certain, check with your local visa issuing office in Oz, but you'll need to visit, or an agent..... find a Chinese travel agent - a visa agent is too likely to say you need one, but you can try them.

In all, no way would I pay the fee the operator wants, it is ridiculously higher than a visa and Shanghai just isn't that good!
