Visa for transiting through Beijing

I hold an Australian passport and will be transiting through Beijing en route to Mongolia the same day after a 9 hour layover. Do I need a visa if I want to leave the airport to go to Beijing city?
Thanks

Yes, you need a transit visa if you wait to leave the airport to go to Beijing city, there is another option to solve this problem if you don't want to obtain a transit visa in advance, you can apply for a 24 hours stay permit by showing your round-trip flight tickets and the Mongolian visa when you arrive in Beijing airport.
