About:China Tourist Visa

Requirements for visa if invited by a national

If invited by a Chinese to visit China, do I need an original letter of invitation from them? ie not a scanned and emailed copy?
DO I then also need to have return tickets and hotel bookings?

yes, you need an original letter of invitation from the inviter in China, which indicates the relationship between the inviter and the invitee, the purpose of this trip, and the inviter’s contact information, i.e. resident address, mobile or home phone number. The inviter’s signature is required.

Once you have the original invitation letter, you don't need to provide return tickets and hotel booking.
