what did the workers eat when constructed the Great Wall?

The government provided grains for the workers, but most workers were starved to death because underdeveloped transportation tools, rough and long roads. The workers also opened up lands to plant grains nearby the work site, hunt animals or dug for wild vegetables as their food.
