A transit visa is not required if you stay at the Guangzhou Airport for less than 24 hours. If you want to leave the airport or the stopover is more than 24 hours, a transit visa is required. If you really don't want to apply a tranist visa in advance, you can try to apply 24 hours stay permit when you arrive in Guangzhou airport by showing flight tickets and valid passport.
