Stop over in Shanghai

I'll be traveling from Sydney, Australia to Seoul, Korea and will have a 24 hour stopover in Shanghai Pudong Airport. Can I leave the airport and return the next day with out a visa. I read online that there is a 48 visa free period for transit passengers, but haven't been able to confirm it. Also, does this visa exemption apply to USA and Korean citizens? Thanks
