Do I need a multiple entries visa to China?

What visas do I need to go to Beijing, then to Shanghai, then on to Hong Kong, then back to China? I am a US citizen.

You just need a double entry visa, you can use the first entry of visa to go to Beijing and then to Shanghai, you can use the second entry of visa to return to Mainland China from Hong Kong.
