About:Lijiang Transportation

Lijiang and area in February

3 friends are going to Lijiang Feb 1st for 10 days. We hope to hike Tiger Leaping Gorge. I know it's a bit early in the season, but it's our only opportunity! Will everything be open? Do we have to pay to walk the gorge, & how much? Is it possible to carry a tent and pitch it? Will places to stay be open? What about Shangrila, is it ok to go there in February?

It is not suggested to visit Shangrila and the Tiger Leaping Gorge in winter, since the weather and the road condition there are not good. However, you may visit Dali, Lijiang and Jinhong in this season.

Hey, sorry I dodn't check this recently! We did indeed go early in Feb 2012, had a brilliant time, weather was great, the walking was fine, met several others doing same. Lijiang is very pretty. We walked Tiger Leaping Gorge in 2 days, staying at Halfway hostel, then at Sean's. All good. Then went to Shangrila, twas ok there too but cold & plenty of snow around, especially on higher ground. Baishuitai & Haba were good. Scary bus ride from Shangrila (Zhongdian) with bus driver handing out cigarettes & smoking as he was negotiating hairpin bends (& using phone as well). We survived somehow. Walked from lovely hostel in Haba back towards Sean's but withoput a decent map we misjudged and were miles out. Thankfully a bus came and rescued us & got us back to Tina's in good time for the bus to Lijiang (& our flights the next day). Fortunately we still had our entry passes for the Gorge so they didn't charge us again.

Oh by the way we didn't bring the tent, I think it might have been possible to camp but difficult.
