Yes, you can apply for a tourist visa from Chinese embassy in Bangkok. Previousely I obtained a China visa in Bangkok without providing the return ticket, bank statement and the hotel booking. In new 2012, I don't know whether the policy changes or not. Generally speaking, it is easy for nationals of UK, USA, Australia, Canada, France and Germany to get a single entry China tourist visa from Bangkok.
