Applying for 2nd Entry

I am a US citizen student going to study in China. My study abroad program requires a field study trip to Hong Kong. The Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in New York would not allow me to apply for multiple entry (which I need to travel to Hong Kong from China and back to China). I was only allowed to have 1 entry because I am applying for a student "F" visa ( studying for 4 months). I was told to apply for another entry once I reach Shanghai. I was wondering where the Chinese Embassy is located in Shanghai, China. Also, would I be able to apply for a 2nd entry after I receive my passport for 1 entry in New York before I leave?

Upon arrival, you need to go to Shanghai Public Security Bureau (PSM) Exit and Entry Administration office to apply for another entry.
There must be some reason the consulate in New York refused to issue double-entry visa, so I'm afraid you'll get refused too when you apply for the second time.

The reason why I was refused with a second entry is simply because I'm applying for a student visa and thus they refuse to give me multiple entry.

In this case, you may give it a try. No one can tell whether you'll get it or not. But I personally think it may be a waste of money.
As told by the consular officers, you can also apply for another entry in Shanghai before going to Hong kong. You can also apply for a new F visa in Hong kong.
BTW, one cannot hold two China visas at the same time, so your previous China visa will be canceled if you get a new visa.
