Hello from New Zealand...
I am planning on visiting at the Mountain late April 2012. I am looking forward to it and in particular want to walk the Planks!! Even though I have a fear of heights - lol. Can you recommend a local hotel that i could travel to from Xian the day before I hike the mountain and then stay at after I have hiked the mountain?

City Hotel, Xian is a good chioce for you, I think. It is located in the prosperous business area of the city center and very close to the Bell Tower.

Is there a town or village closer to the Mountain than Xian that I could travel to and stay the night?

There are some hotels locating on the foot of the Hua Mountain, such as HuaShan Hotel, Huashan Inn and Huayin Kaiyuan Hotel, but the hotels there can not be compared with the ones in Xian city. You may consider to stay there overnight.
