I'm a Swedish backpacker. Do I need to apply for the China visa at the border or beforehand?

If I, as a Swedish backpacker travelling through Mongolia by train, wish to pass through and visit China as well, can I apply for a Chinese visa at the Chinese border or do I need one in advance?
