Chinese visa for attending a workshop

I am currently in Japan on a research grant. My Japan visa is classified under Cultural activities (6months).

I will be attending a workshop at a university in China for 4 days. What kind of visa do I apply for? The visit visa (F)? If so, do I just need to submit an invitation letter from the university where I will be attending the workshop? Thank you.

Yes, you need to apply for a business visa ( F visa). One of the requirements is the "Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit" or "Confirmation Letter of Invitation". The invitation letter from the university is not enough.
