About:Chinese Temporary Residence Permit

re registering in police station once going abroad

1.I live and work in shanghai and have a temporary residence permit as renting a flat, I often go abroad on business. When I leave China and enter again I have heard that you have to re-register with the police every time. This is a a bit ridiculous but is it true? do you have to do it in 24 hours

2. If it is true do they count going to Hong kong as abroad?

3. what happens if you go abroad but enter back in a different part of china that is not shanghai in my case and you dont go back to shanghai for a week or so do you have to register in some other police station or is the hotel you stay in sufficient? or what happens if youi stayed in a friends house.

1. yes, according to the exit-entry administration law of P.R.China, you need to re-registerwith the police every time when you leave China and enter again.

2. yes, they count going to Hong Kong as abroad.

3. you have to register in some other police station if you don't return to Shanghai from abroad. If you stay at a hotel, you just need to show your passport and the temporary residence permit to the hotel and fill an Accommodation Sheet. If you stay in a friend's house, you also need to go to local police station to fill an Accommodation Sheet.

The rule for make registration is not strict. In fact, many foreigners don't make the registration if they go to China for sightseeing. They won't fine or kick you out of China. However, you can't overstay in China.
