Can I get an extension on a 3 month tourist visa while still in China? I want to extend for another 2 months as my girlfriend is here on a 5 month work assignment. I thought I had to go to Hong Kong to do this, but can I get an extension in Shanghai?

You can try to apply for 2 months extension at the Exit-Entry Administrative Bureau of Shanghai Public Security Bureau. If you can't get it, you can go to Hong Kong to make it.
