Do Foreigners need to bring passport when buying bullet train tickets from Shanghai to Beijing?

We are foreigners. My friend and I will be in Shanghai next week. However, I will be there first by a couple of days. I intend to buy train tickets for him when I buy mine. but a friend told me that passport are needed. Can I not buy ticket for my friend?

Foreigners are required to show the passport when purchasing tickets on bullet trains and high-speed trains. Passport copy is also acceptable. So, you can let your friend fax his/her passport copy to you.
