i'm not italian, what should i provide to apply for a china tourist visa for 3 months

I'd like to obtain 3months single entry visa. I'm not Italian, so the question is what documents (besides passport and permesso di soggiorno) do I need? I want to stay in China for 3 months at my friend's place do I still need to book hotel for the whole period or roundtrip flight tickets will do?

Besides the passport and permesso di soggiorno, you also need to provide one passport photo, filled visa application form V.2011A and V.2011B, the invitation letter from your friend, round-trip flight ticket or onward ticket exiting China, the copy of your friend's passport and his China residence permit, then you don't need to provide hotel booking.

Hi Bob, thanks for the prompt answer. Another question. Is there a specific format (or form) for the letter of invitation? What do you actually write there? Can it be written in english?

It can be wrriten in English, there is not a format or form for the personal invitation letter. Your friend can write in his own format, including the information of name, passport number and birth date of you and your friend, the purpose of invitation, the entry date, exit date, stay duration, travel itinerary and residece place.
