According to the merits of each applicant, the bank statement maybe required. Bank statement means the bank certificate with receipt or original passbook, updated within the month that you are applying for China visa. You can try to submit visa application without bank statement. The Invitation letter from China side and the round way plane ticket are sufficient. Generally speaking, the visa officer asks applicants to provide bank statement because he/she doubts that applicants can't burden the expense in China.
