Is it possible to travel independently to China?

I would like to visit China - Beijing, Xian and then on to Shanghai - but want to travel independently, not with an organised tour. All flights and accommodation would be pre-booked and I would not be travelling outside these main tourist areas. Yet I have been told by some people however that it is not possible to visit China without being part of an organised tour? is this true?

Well, it is OK for you to travel to China independently, but it may be a little inconvenient for you to arrange all the things. An organise tour can make almost everything done for you to make your trip easy and comfortable.
