About:China Visa Exemption

Hi, I am visiting Shanghai (transiting through, my connecting flight to Vietnam leaves a little over 24 hours after I land in Shanghai). I hold a Canadian passport. Do I need a visa to leave the airport and see Shanghai?

I called my local embassy and they told me other wise so I am very confused... it is possible they didn't understand my question, though.

You don't need a visa to leave the airport in Shanghai to see Shanghai. Canadian passport holders enjoy 48 hours visa free for transit in Shanghai.
