anyone can advise on the best route other than by air to Taiwan from Fuzhou?

Aside from the airplane, you can also take ferry from Mawei pier Fuzhou to Matsu pier Taiwan. On weekdays and Sundays, there is a shuttle liner daily between Mawei and Matsu.0
