About:China Visa Application in USA

My wife and I live in Boise, Idaho. We plan on visiting our son in China this fall, he works as an expat in Shenzhen. I read that we are under the Washington DC jurisdiction. It also says they do not take mail request. Washington DC is on the opposite end of the country for us, almost 3,000 miles a way. How do we apply and obtain a visa? Is there a closer place we can apply, or do we need a travel agent?
Thank you. this is very confusing.

You are required to submit your visa applicaition to China embassy in Washington DC. And you can entrust someone else or a visa agency to do it on your bahalf if you can not go there in person.
