About:Chinese Consulate in Chicago

I have applied for a Chinese visa since 4th January 2011. I intend to travel to China in summer (May) but I haven't had any reply from the Embassy. I am an international student in the USA.Is my passport safe? I tried calling the Embassy but their voice mail is always full. What can I do?
Thanks.

How did you submit the application? Did the embassy give you a pick pick-up receipt? For regular service, it takes 4 working days for processing, if you submit the application by post, I think your passport and other documents are lost.

Many thanks for the response. I submitted the application in person and have a reciept for that. Because I live in West Lafayette on campus, I opted for the mail back service which I had paid for and submitted a self addressed return envelop. I have been expecting the return envelop and haven't had it yet so I get worried about my passport

Mr.Felix, sorry to tell you that you have to be responsible for any loss or damage to your passport and documents due to any mishandling by the post office or other delivery services.

I think your passport is lost when it is mailed back, the consulate will mail out the package in 5-7 working days from the date of application, now, almost two months pass, you have not received your passport and visa. In fact, it is early for you to apply for China visa in January if you intend to travel to China in May. You can apply for it in late March or early April, a single entry visa is only valid for 3 months, it expires when you go to China in May.
