What are the visa requirement to visit Beijing for a transit?

Greetings,

I am an American citizen living in San Francisco. I will be stopping over for 23hrs in Beijing on my way to Japan. What are the Visa Requirements here? May I visit the city?

Hi, if you want to go outside the airport to have view of the city, you need a visa. You can also apply a transit permit at the airport. Otherwise, you can stay in the airport within 24 hours without any visa.
