About:Tibet Travel

Hi there
I am joining a tour group in Tibet in April and following the tour, I'd like to stay in Tibet and explore Lhasa more and then go to the U Region. this would be an extra 5-7 days before going to kathmandu on the 7th of may. Do i need a permit for this? I have read that I do not. This would be most helpful to know.
Thank you in advance
Amanda
