About:Chinese Consulate in San Francisco

we are taking a cruise in april beginning in singapore and ending in kobe, japan. we have two overnight stops in hong kong and shanghai. we will tour on our own, not with the group from the ship. do we require a single or multiple entry visa. we will stay aboard the ship, rather than a hotel on land, therefore entering both days in each city while in port.

USA nationals are exempt from a visa to Hong Kong for up to 90 days. You just need a single-entry visa to Shanghai.
