About:Marriage Registration in China

My Chinese girlfriend is expecting our baby soon. She lives in China and I travel to see her every month from London. I was told by someone that in order for her to have the child, and to get any maternity services from the Chinese Hospital it is important for her to present a marriage certificate, otherwise they will refuse her any medical/maternity case. We decided to get married after the baby is born, due to a number of reasons. Please advise if my GF will be refused such a service - I appreciate your help!

Yes this is true. If a chinese child is born with the mother being unmarried, it is considered as a non-person with no state rights to medical care. Additionally, as the legal age of marriage for Chinese women is 20 years old, any child born to a woman below that age will not receive medical treatment for the same reason. This is why so many Chinese women will sell their children to adoption brokers. If you want to know how serious of an issue this is, I recommend watching the HBO documentary, "China's Stolen Children." When I spoke to my friends in China about this, they agreed it is true. http://www.hbo.com/documentaries/chinas-stolen-children/index.html
