As you can see, our family name is Kanas, as in Kanas Lake. We would like visit the Lake for one night as part of our trip in July/August. It seems that the quickest and easiest way to get there is to fly to Urumqi, take a coach to Burqin County but then how do we get to Kanas and how long would that take? Is there a better or easier way? If we decide on local accommodation, how do we book? Also, do we need to book the coach in advance or can we catch one on the day we arrive?

there are shuttle buses from Burqin to Kanas Lake, taking about 22.5 hours and costing around CNY200. I think you have to book the coach in advance. By the way, I advise you take a tour to visit the Kanas lake, since it is located far away from the city woth limited transportation.

The above info is wrong, from Burqin to Kanas entrance will need about 2 - 3 hours by bus, not 22 hours. At present there is Kanas airport, which operate daily flights between kanas and urumqi.

At the entrance of Kanas, there is a small town named Jiadengyu, there you'll find very good villla accommodations, with rather good facilities and excellent environment.
