I have been told that I may not be able to get a tourist Visa since I am not resident in the U.S.I will only be there for 6 weeks and return home.What would I need to do to get a tourist Visa from Nigeria,so I can go on the tour with the rest of my collegues in the U.S when I arrive there.Thanks

I'm afraid that you can't get a tourist visa from Nigeria because China embassy/consulate in Nigeria doesn't issue tourist visa to individual tourists. You can go to the embassy to enquire it, otherwise, you have to give up your tours in China(https://www.travelchinaguide.com/tour/default.htm)
