do we need a chinese visa if we go out of the beijing capital airport?

I am a Canadian citizen, and my husband is Taiwanese. We are going to Taiwan go thourgh Beijing. We got a free hotel provide my the airplain for one night. It is less 24 hrs, but need to out of the airport. Do we need a chinese visa? If yes, can we have our visa done at the airport?Thanks,
