About:Handshaking in China

Hi!
I am writing a novel set in China (doing a few last minute checks!) and I wanted to know: if a male teacher or elder or host meets a female, is there a way to indice that he wants to shake hands (and does she have the right to ignore it and not hold out her hand) or is it common courtesy to hold out her hand anyway to a male host or elder?

Please explain. Thanks!
Tori

For formal occasion, she should hold out hands and shake hands with the male host. It should be up to your settings, the plot and the role of the female. How about this, the male host just is just thinking if he could shake her hands to show courtesy as he usually does. When he hold out his hands to the famale, he changes at last. Have a gesture showing the way or indicate to sit down. I think this is better.
