What is the likelihood of people on the train network to speak English? Or will I need to be able to speak Chinese? And is there any writing in English inside the station to help foreigners?

Please don't worry, the marks in the railway station are written in Chinese and English. But, it seems that few people on the train could speak English. Some may understand a few simple words. You may ask other to write down your questions in Chinese in advance. Anyway, lots of foreigners take trains in China and everything is going on well. The Chinese is glad to help you if he knows English.
