we have been invited to spend christmas with a family in hong kong - can you advice me of the usual etiquette etc

Do you mean a Chinese family? Well, I think there is no special etiquette, just enjoy your time. Oh, you may have to get over the cultural difference, such as table manner. Suggested you read the introduction on this website.
