HI,
we will be coming to Japan for a two week visit, we will then be getting the ferry to Shanghai for a stay of a month in China. As UK citizens with a UK passport are we able to get a chinese Visa at the Chinese embassy in Tokyo?

Yes,Mrs.Mee, you are able to get a visa in Japan. Since you are going to live in japan for 2 weeks, your entry record (and its copy) is required to apply for a visa to China.
